18 March 2010 – HP and Oriel help WWF-Australia to virtualise IT for a lower environmental impact.

HP, in partnership with Oriel Technologies, has implemented a new virtualisation solution in WWF-Australia, to lower the environmental impact of their IT and deliver cost savings.

WWF-Australia wanted to take advantage of more energy efficient technologies in their data centre and reduce the operational and support costs associated with running a multivendor platform. This drove the decision to undertake a data centre refresh which was completed in February 2010.

“As a conservation organisation we wanted to lead by example, by using more energy efficient technologies that would reduce our power draw” said Paul Molloy, Chief Financial Officer of WWF-Australia. “Also operating as a not-for-profit, it was important to us to minimise the operational costs of our IT, so that we can put more of our resources towards our conservation efforts.”

“Legacy, multivendor environments can be difficult and costly to run” said Paul Robson, Director of Enterprise Storage, Servers and Networking, HP South Pacific. “By standardising on newer, more energy efficient systems, WWF-Australia will not only reduce their support and running costs, but will also reduce their power requirements”

Choosing HP for their fully virtualised solution, WWF-Australia replaced aged Sun and IBM technologies, with HP BladeSystems running VMWare, HP EVA Storage Array Networks and HP ProCurve switches. Oriel Technologies designed and implemented the solution and will provide ongoing managed services. Oriel has become a sponsor of WWF-Australia, in support of their valuable conservation work.

“Although we wanted to deliver a cost-conscious solution to benefit this not-for-profit organisation, we also ensured that Oriel and HP delivered a high quality solution that provided scope to grow” said Jake Wynne, Managing Director of Oriel Technologies. He continues “Implementing HP end to end provides a solid platform for business continuity and disaster recovery.”

Future plans include the implementation of HP Thin Clients, for a VMware desktop virtualisation solution, that will further reduce energy consumption. It will also enable WWF-Australia to more easily scale up their desktop fleet each year, to support the increased workforce needed for Earth Hour, occurring this year on 27 March 2010.

14 August 2009 – Chris Fydler, Oriel’s General Manager, is appointed Deputy Chefs de Mission for the Australian Olympic Team.

Oriel’s General Manager, Chris Fydler, a swimming gold medallist at the Sydney Olympics has been appointed Deputy Chefs de Mission for the Australian Olympic Team to compete at the 2012 London Games. Don’t panic, this isn’t a full time role, it’ll be business as usual until 2012 when Chris will take several weeks off to attend to his official Olympic duties.

Together with dual rowing gold medallist Nick Green who is the 2012 Chef de Mission, Chris Fydler and Kitty Chiller form a completely new team. The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) believed “it was time to introduce the next generation of Olympic leaders in Australia.”

“In Nick, Chris and Kitty we have three outstanding leaders who excelled as athletes and have continued in that vein in their business and private lives post their competitive years. We have no doubt they will make a major contribution to the on-going success of our Olympic Teams” AOC President John Coates said.

Fydler is a lawyer and a member of the Swimming Australia (SA) Board. He was a member of the swim team for 12 years and team captain for four. He has represented Australia at three Olympic Games, three World Championships and three Commonwealth Games.

‘Team’ Oriel has always been incredibly proud of Chris' achievements, and extraordinarily pleased to have such a multi-talented and successful General Manager. However, in the meantime, we’ll keep him well grounded. As Briony from Oriel jested, “For those that don’t know, “Deputy Chef de Mission” means Deputy Chief of Mission. It doesn’t mean they are sending Chris along as the team cook!”.

20 February 2008 – Wyse Technology, awards Oriel as the 2007 “Up and Coming Reseller”

Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing, recognised Oriel as the 2007 “Up and Coming Reseller” in January for innovations in the industry’s hottest area: VDI.

As Ward Nash of WYSE states, ‘the annual award acknowledges Oriel’s winning approach to VDI, which included extending their existing VMware Lab to incorporate VDI Solutions in addition to deploying a VDI solution internally.’

“Oriel is unique in one big way: they focus on VDI,” he says. “Not only can they clearly explain the difference between server consolidation and the virtual desktop… but they can also invite you in to see VDI ‘alive’ in the lab and can substantiate what they’re talking about from their own experience.”

Oriel’s Practice Manager, Rodney Haywood says the award affirmed the hard work we’ve done with our vendors to really implement best practices into our customer base. “We work with Wyse on VDI because they are best practice in thin computing... It’s great to be recognised by them for being best-practice in what we do, too.”

Oriel’s flatulent cow continues to turn heads!

Our emissions campaign “Ain’t that the Truth” continues to gain momentum and international press. Amongst the latest, Windows IT Pro – a leading US site, humorously states our campaign “… serves as the inspiration for a hilarious flash animation that spells out the real benefits of using server virtualization, which you can view in its gaseous entirety on the Ain't That the Truth Web site.”

Whilst the US Information Week Blog notes, “Frankly, if Oriel's creativity is representative of international channel partners, I can understand VMware's recent push to expand and support the channel.”
